A late-night journey to a temple turned tragic when a speeding car crashed at a mountainous pass, claiming three lives and injuring four others. The fatal single-car accident occurred at Kannad ghat in Chalisgaon taluka of Jalgaon district late on Wednesday night, with police confirming the details on Thursday.
Victims Identified, Pilgrimage Ends in Tragedy
The police have identified the three deceased men, all hailing from Shevgaon in Ahilyanagar district. They are Rambhau Ambhore (27), Shekhar Durpate (31), and Ghanshyam Pisote (31). According to Additional Superintendent of Police Kavita Nerkar, the group was on a religious trip. "The men from Shevgaon were heading to Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, when they met with an accident at 11 pm," Nerkar stated.
How the Kannad Ghat Accident Unfolded
The officer provided a clear sequence of the events leading to the crash. "There were seven people in the car that was speeding. There was no other vehicle involved in the accident. The driver lost control, causing the accident in which three men died on the spot," Nerkar added. The collision happened at a particularly dangerous section of the road.
The accident site was the V-point of the ghat, a sharp turn. The vehicle, moving at high speed, violently rammed into the protective wall lining the ghat road. The impact was so severe that the car's bonnet was completely crushed, indicating the force of the collision.
Aftermath and Current Condition of Survivors
Following the immediate tragedy, the four other occupants of the car were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care. Providing an update on their health, Additional SP Nerkar confirmed that all four injured individuals are now out of danger and are receiving treatment. The police investigation into the exact cause, including factors like driver fatigue or road conditions, is ongoing.
This incident has once again highlighted the perils of speeding on treacherous ghat roads, especially during night travel. It serves as a grim reminder for motorists to exercise extreme caution, maintain safe speeds, and ensure vehicle fitness before undertaking long journeys, particularly on challenging routes like the Kannad ghat.
