A police operation to apprehend alleged burglars in Kolkata's Tangra area descended into violence, resulting in injuries to eight officers and culminating in the arrest of three individuals. The Kolkata Police, spearheaded by local units and the detective department, made the arrests a day after the chaotic incident.
Violent Resistance During Police Operation
The confrontation unfolded on Monday when a joint team from Bidhannagar South, Bidhannagar North, and Electronic Complex police stations conducted a raid at 66 Debendra Chandra Dey Road. The officers were acting on a case registered under Bidhannagar South Police Station. However, their attempt to arrest wanted criminals was met with fierce opposition.
According to police reports, a mob of approximately 50 people violently resisted the operation. The group was allegedly led by family members of the suspects, including the mother-in-law of one accused, Jumrati Molla, and the mother of another suspect named Lalchand. The crowd pelted stones at the police team, causing injuries and damaging a government vehicle.
Arrests Made and Charges Filed
Following the altercation, the police successfully arrested three suspects, all residents of the same Tangra address. The arrested individuals have been identified as Jumrati Molla (31), Rinku Sk alias Chikna (24), and Md Miraz (27).
The trio now faces a series of serious charges under the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The charges include:
- Wrongful restraint
- Assaulting or using criminal force against a public servant to deter duty
- Voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons
- Assault to deter a public servant from duty
- Joint criminal liability
These sections are being read alongside the Prevention of Damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act.
Aftermath and Current Situation
The injured police personnel, including Sub-Inspector Provash Ghosh, Sub-Inspector Sanjay Mukherjee, and Lady Assistant Sub-Inspector Swapna Majumder, received medical treatment at a nearby hospital. Authorities have stated that the situation in Tangra has since returned to normal, with a continued police presence in the area to ensure peace and prevent any further disturbances.
Police officials confirmed that raids are ongoing to apprehend several other individuals involved in the violent incident. The investigation continues as law enforcement works to identify all participants in the mob that attacked the officers.
