Kandhamal Deploys 27 Platoons for Christmas Security, Heightens Vigil
27 Platoons Deployed for Christmas Security in Kandhamal

Authorities in Odisha's Kandhamal district have implemented a comprehensive security plan to ensure a peaceful Christmas celebration. The district, which has a significant Christian population, is witnessing heightened vigilance with the deployment of substantial police forces and intensified patrolling.

Major Police Deployment Across Sensitive Zones

A total of 27 platoons of police forces, supported by 85 officers, have been strategically stationed across sensitive areas of the district. Superintendent of Police (Kandhamal) Harish B C confirmed the large-scale deployment. Vehicle checking is being rigorously conducted at various points throughout Kandhamal to monitor movement and prevent any untoward incidents.

In a targeted approach, police personnel have also been posted at specific churches identified as being in vulnerable locations. To ensure dynamic surveillance, mobile patrolling has been significantly increased across the region, keeping a constant watch on public order.

Anti-Maoist Operations and Peace Committee Meetings

Security forces have been placed on high alert regarding potential movements of left-wing extremists. Anti-Maoist operations were carried out in several vulnerable areas ahead of the festive occasion. As a visible show of strength and reassurance, police conducted flag marches in different parts of the district.

A district-level peace committee meeting was recently convened in Phulbani. The gathering was attended by Collector Ved Bhushan, SP Harish B C, along with various religious leaders and representatives from different organisations. Similar peace committee meetings were also held under the jurisdiction of each police station to foster community cooperation.

Drive Against Unlawful Activities and Historical Context

The police have launched a special drive in the lead-up to the festivities. This initiative focuses on curbing the consumption of alcohol in public spaces and preventing other unlawful activities, as stated by the SP. Collector Ved Bhushan has made a public appeal, urging all sections of society to maintain harmony and work with the administration for an incident-free Christmas and New Year.

The enhanced security measures are viewed in the context of the district's past. Kandhamal witnessed severe communal riots in 2008 following the assassination of senior VHP member Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and his four disciples on August 23 of that year. The current preparations aim to prevent any recurrence of violence during this festive period.

Amidst the security blanket, the festive spirit is evident. Churches and prayer houses across Kandhamal are adorned with lights and stars, with children and young adults actively practising choral singing for Christmas celebrations.
