A 19-year-old Rohingya man was brutally stabbed to death in the early hours of Wednesday following a violent drunken altercation at a refugee camp in Hyderabad's Balapur area. The victim, identified as Murshid Alam, worked as a rag picker and sustained a shocking 19 stab wounds in the attack.
Drunken Argument Turns Fatal
The incident occurred at Camp-29 in Royal Colony, where the victim's family has resided for the past 12 years after migrating from Myanmar. According to the police investigation and a complaint filed by the victim's father, Islam Noor, both Murshid Alam and the accused, 21-year-old labourer Abdullah Mohammed, had consumed liquor on Tuesday night at a neighbouring camp.
An argument erupted between the two around 1:30 am on Wednesday. The dispute escalated rapidly. DCP Maheshwaram Narayana Reddy stated that both individuals were under the influence of alcohol, and Murshid attempted to assault Abdullah. In retaliation, Abdullah allegedly went to his home in Camp-13, fetched a knife, and launched a vicious attack on Murshid on the road.
Victim Found with Multiple Stab Wounds
The family was alerted by a camp resident, Jani Aslam. Upon rushing to the spot, they discovered Murshid lying on the road, bleeding profusely from multiple stab injuries. Despite locals alerting the Balapur police and calling a 108 ambulance, Murshid was declared dead at the scene by paramedics. His body was subsequently shifted to the Osmania General Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.
The autopsy revealed the sheer brutality of the assault, confirming 19 distinct stab injuries on the victim's throat, chest, back, stomach, and hands. In his complaint, the grieving father Noor pleaded for the arrest of the accused and appropriate legal action.
Accused Arrested, Ninth Murder of the Month
Acting swiftly on the complaint, the Balapur police registered a case under Section 103 (1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against Abdullah Mohammed. The accused was taken into custody from Camp-13 later on Wednesday. After the autopsy, the victim's body was handed over to his family for last rites.
This tragic event highlights the grim statistic of rising violent crime in the area. This murder is reportedly the ninth such homicide reported from Hyderabad and its neighbouring municipalities in the month of December alone. The case underscores the challenges faced by refugee communities and the consequences of alcohol-fueled violence.
