Bengaluru's roads have witnessed an alarming surge in traffic violations by delivery agents, with police data revealing a staggering 1.46 lakh cases recorded between January 2023 and March 2025. The city's rapidly growing delivery ecosystem has created significant challenges for traffic management and road safety.
The Rising Tide of Delivery Violations
According to data obtained from the Bengaluru Traffic Police, delivery executives working for major platforms including Swiggy, Zomato, Amazon, and Flipkart have been involved in numerous traffic infractions. The period between 2023 and the first quarter of 2025 saw 1,46,678 traffic violation cases registered against these delivery personnel.
The breakdown of violations presents a concerning picture of road safety. Police records show that 74,975 cases involved riding without valid documents, while an additional 25,096 cases were registered for speeding and dangerous driving. Other common infractions included signal jumping, wrong-side driving, and riding on footpaths.
Police Response and Enforcement Measures
In response to this growing problem, the Bengaluru Traffic Police have intensified their enforcement efforts. A senior police official confirmed that special drives are being conducted specifically targeting delivery agents who flout traffic rules. The police have also initiated discussions with leading delivery companies to address this issue systematically.
"We have been regularly conducting special drives against delivery executives who violate traffic rules," stated a traffic police official. The enforcement actions have particularly focused on areas with high delivery activity, including commercial hubs, IT corridors, and residential neighborhoods with concentrated food delivery demand.
Industry Pressure and Safety Concerns
The surge in violations highlights the intense pressure faced by delivery agents to meet tight deadlines and performance metrics. Industry experts suggest that the "quick delivery" culture and incentive structures that prioritize speed over safety are contributing factors to this problem.
Road safety advocates have expressed serious concerns about the situation. "The increasing number of violations by delivery executives is becoming a major safety concern for all road users," noted a traffic safety expert. Pedestrians and other motorists have reported numerous close calls and accidents involving speeding delivery vehicles.
The data reveals that certain types of violations are more prevalent during specific times. Signal jumping and wrong-side driving cases peak during lunch and dinner hours, coinciding with high order volumes. Weekend evenings show the highest concentration of speeding violations as delivery agents rush to complete multiple orders.
Looking Forward: Solutions and Responsibilities
Traffic police officials emphasize that both enforcement and education are crucial to addressing this challenge. They have suggested that delivery companies should take greater responsibility for ensuring their agents follow traffic rules and undergo proper training.
Some proposed solutions include:
- Mandatory traffic safety training for all delivery personnel
- Revised incentive structures that prioritize safety over speed
- Better tracking systems to monitor driving behavior
- Stricter penalties for repeat offenders
As Bengaluru continues to embrace the convenience of quick deliveries, finding the right balance between efficiency and road safety remains a critical challenge for authorities, delivery companies, and the community at large.
