Delhi Police has made a fresh arrest in connection with the recent stone-pelting incident at the Turkman Gate area, bringing the total number of individuals apprehended to 13. The arrest comes as authorities significantly bolstered security arrangements in the sensitive locality ahead of Friday congregational prayers to prevent any escalation of tensions.
Latest Arrest and Ongoing Investigation
According to officials, the police have taken Mohd Imran (36) into custody. Additional Commissioner of Police (Central) Nidhin Valsan confirmed the development, stating that further investigation in the case is actively underway. He assured that security would remain heightened in the area as a precautionary measure.
The violent episode, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, resulted in injuries to at least five police personnel. Those arrested earlier on January 8 were identified as Afaan, Adil, Shahnawaz, Hamza, Atharr, and Ubed, all residents of the Turkman Gate vicinity. Police allege they played a role in instigating others to engage in stone-pelting.
Social Media Rumours and Political Links Probed
In a significant twist to the investigation, police have identified 10 social media influencers accused of allegedly spreading false rumours that a mosque in the area had been demolished. This misinformation is believed to have exacerbated the situation. Authorities have summoned a woman social media influencer for questioning in this regard.
Furthermore, the probe is extending to possible political instigation. Law enforcement is likely to send notices to two politicians, including Samajwadi Party leader Mohibbullah Nadvi, who was reportedly present at the spot. The notices will ask them to join the investigation concerning the incitement that led to the violence.
Heavy Security Deployment for Friday Prayers
With Friday prayers being a focal point for community gatherings, Delhi Police left nothing to chance. A substantial force comprising police and paramilitary personnel was deployed across sensitive pockets. Senior officers were on the ground to supervise the elaborate security blueprint.
Additional forces were stationed near mosques and in adjoining lanes. Strategic pickets were established to regulate movement and prevent any untoward incident. The police also leveraged technology, using drone surveillance and CCTV monitoring to maintain a close watch over the area.
Another police officer reported that the situation remained peaceful and under control. "We have made adequate security arrangements as a precautionary measure in view of Friday prayers. Our teams are maintaining strict vigil and are in constant touch with local community members," the officer stated. The police have also appealed to citizens to maintain peace and avoid believing or forwarding unverified messages.
The case underscores the volatile mix of local tensions, the rapid spread of misinformation on social media, and the potential role of political figures. The proactive arrests and massive security deployment reflect the police's strategy to clamp down on unrest and ensure public order during sensitive periods.
