In the wake of violent clashes during an anti-encroachment drive in Central Delhi, authorities have significantly tightened security and imposed restrictions on gatherings. The incident, which left several police personnel injured, has led to a series of arrests and a heightened police presence in sensitive areas ahead of the weekly Friday prayers.
Heightened Security and Restrictions Imposed
The Delhi Police on Friday advised residents to offer namaz at their homes as a precautionary measure. This advisory comes after the imposition of BNSS Section 163, which restricts unlawful gatherings, in the vicinity of the Faiz-e-Elahi Mosque located in Turkman Gate. A substantial police force has been deployed across key localities including Turkman Gate, Chandni Mahal, Ballimaran, and Jama Masjid within the Walled City. Police are also maintaining a close watch on sensitive pockets of Jamia Nagar and Northeast Delhi to prevent any further escalation of tensions.
Arrests and Investigation into the Violence
The police investigation into the January 7th violence has progressed with the arrest of one more individual, Mohammad Imran, a resident of Sultanpuri. He is alleged to have been involved in the stone-pelting that targeted police personnel during the demolition drive to raze illegal structures on public land. With Imran's detention, the total number of arrests in this case has now reached 12 individuals.
Authorities believe that a mob of approximately 25 to 35 people was involved in the incident. Preliminary investigations suggest that a group from outside the area may have instigated local residents to participate in the stone-pelting and violence. The police have formed more than a dozen teams to probe whether there was a deeper conspiracy behind the creation of the law and order situation.
Questioning of Influencers and Politicians
Beyond the physical altercation, the police are also examining the role of social media in the event. A YouTuber and social media influencer, who was summoned for questioning on Thursday, allegedly recorded a video during the demolition that criticized the action. The police have identified 10 influencers accused of spreading rumors that the mosque had been completely demolished, and notices are being served to them.
Furthermore, the police have indicated that they will soon send notices to two politicians suspected of being involved in instigating people during the incident. This expansion of the probe highlights the multi-faceted approach authorities are taking to address both the on-ground violence and the potential provocation behind it.
The situation remains tense but under surveillance, with police urging cooperation from the community to maintain peace, especially during the congregational prayers on Friday.
