Andhra Pradesh Court Imposes 10-Year Sentence for Major Marijuana Bust
In a significant ruling against drug trafficking, the IX-additional district judge court in Chodavaram, Anakapalle district, Andhra Pradesh, has sentenced two individuals to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for possession of a large quantity of marijuana. The convicted persons, identified as Vanthala Jayaram and Golluri Bheemaraju, were found guilty of possessing 148 kilograms of marijuana. In addition to the prison sentence, the court imposed a substantial fine of Rs 1 lakh on each convict. Police Investigation and Seizure
According to Anakapalle district police chief Tuhin Sinha, the Chodavaram police intercepted Jayaram and Bheemaraju on September 2, 2016, while they were transporting the dry cannabis near Gowripatnam. The police acted swiftly, seizing the entire 148 kg of marijuana and apprehending the duo on the spot. The investigation that followed revealed that the two had procured the marijuana from tribal areas with the intention of transporting it to another location for distribution.
Legal Proceedings and Forensic Evidence
Following the arrest, the police registered a formal case against the smugglers under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. To strengthen the case, authorities obtained a forensic report from the Regional Examination Laboratory, which conclusively established that the seized material was indeed a narcotic substance. This forensic evidence played a crucial role in the prosecution, leading to the filing of a charge sheet and the subsequent court proceedings.
