Yogi Govt Accelerates Gola Pump Canal Project to Boost Irrigation in Gorakhpur
Yogi Govt Accelerates Gola Pump Canal Project for Irrigation

Farmers in the southern region of Gorakhpur are set to receive improved and uninterrupted irrigation facilities as the Yogi government accelerates the modernization of the Chaudhary Charan Singh Gola Pump Canal project. Officials confirmed that nearly two-thirds of the work under the Rs 22.29-crore project has already been completed.

Project Overview and Progress

Constructed in 1957, the canal system is undergoing a major technological and infrastructure upgrade aimed at improving water supply efficiency and eliminating voltage-related interruptions that have historically affected irrigation operations. According to executive engineer Vishwanath Shukla of the irrigation department, the project has achieved 68% physical progress and is targeted for completion by March 2027.

Key Infrastructure Upgrades

As part of the modernization, the capacity of the existing power substation is being upgraded from 33/3.3 KV to 33/11 KV. Additionally, HT and LT transformers are being strengthened to support better power supply for canal operations. Officials also noted that five old 60-cusec horizontal split casing Jyoti make pumps are being replaced with higher-capacity pumps. The existing 250 KW, 3.3 KV HT motors are being upgraded to 250 KW, 11 KV motors. Furthermore, new mud pumps and dewatering pumps are being installed under the project.

Benefits for Farmers

The revamp is expected to improve water discharge and ensure supply reaches the tail end of the canal network. The project will directly benefit farmers in Gola and Bansgaon tehsils, where nearly 13,000 hectares of farmland depend on the canal for irrigation. Enhanced irrigation facilities are anticipated to boost agricultural productivity and income for local farmers.

Officials emphasized that the modernization will not only increase the reliability of water supply but also reduce operational disruptions caused by voltage fluctuations. The upgraded power infrastructure will provide consistent electricity to run pumps efficiently, ensuring timely irrigation for crops.
