UP to Develop 100 Model Ponds in Every District

Uttar Pradesh Government Launches Major Pond Restoration Drive

In a significant environmental initiative aimed at enhancing rural health and water quality, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced plans to develop 100 model ponds in every district across the state. This ambitious project, directed by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, seeks to transform selected ponds by eliminating grey water discharge and plastic waste contamination.

Campaign Implementation and Initial Focus

The project will be executed under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) by the Panchayati Raj department through a dedicated campaign titled 'Mera Talab Meri Zimmedari'. DM Deepak Meena confirmed that the initiative will ensure selected ponds are made free from pollutants. In the first phase, the drive will concentrate on villages with populations exceeding 5,000, targeting areas where water bodies play a critical role in community life and environmental sustainability.

Importance of Ponds and Current Challenges

Officials emphasized that ponds in rural areas are vital for multiple purposes, including groundwater recharge, irrigation, biodiversity conservation, and social activities. However, these water bodies have been increasingly polluted by untreated grey water from kitchens, bathrooms, and washing areas, along with plastic waste. This contamination poses serious health and environmental risks, such as waterborne diseases and ecosystem degradation.

Detailed Restoration Plan

Under the comprehensive plan, selected ponds will be designated as no-plastic zones to prevent further waste accumulation. Specific measures include:

  • Installation of plastic traps and filter chambers at drainage points to block waste entry.
  • Setup of bio-filter systems using gravel, sand, and aquatic plants to treat grey water before it discharges into ponds.
  • Monitoring of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) levels to assess water quality improvements post-restoration.

Community Involvement and Expected Outcomes

To ensure the sustainability of this initiative, community-level monitoring will be implemented, encouraging local participation in maintaining the restored ponds. Authorities anticipate that this project will lead to a reduction in mosquito-borne diseases and a significant enhancement in rural sanitation and environmental conditions. By addressing pollution at its source, the Uttar Pradesh government aims to create healthier, more sustainable rural communities through improved water management practices.
