Uttar Pradesh Sets Ambitious Goal to Transform into India's Premier Data Economy Hub
In a significant move to bolster its digital infrastructure, the state of Uttar Pradesh is implementing a comprehensive strategy to establish itself as the central hub of India's burgeoning data economy. This initiative is being driven by a dedicated data centre policy and substantial budgetary allocations designed to attract and facilitate the development of multiple data centres across the region.
Budgetary Announcements and Strategic Framework
During the 2025-26 budget presentation, the state government unveiled plans for the creation of large-scale data centre clusters and the formation of a State Data Centre Authority. This new regulatory body will oversee and streamline the establishment and operation of data centres, ensuring a cohesive and efficient approach to digital infrastructure development.
The government has set a clear and ambitious target: to develop 4-5 large data centre clusters with a combined capacity of 5 gigawatts by the year 2030. This target reflects the state's commitment to capitalizing on the rapid growth in digital usage and the increasing demand for cloud services.
Current Projects and Investment Inflows
Work on several key projects is already underway, marking a proactive start to this ambitious plan. In addition to the large clusters, the state plans to develop eight data centre parks with a total capacity of 900 megawatts. These parks are expected to attract an investment of approximately Rs 30,000 crore, significantly boosting the local economy.
The government has issued letters of comfort to eight specific projects, which include six data centre parks and two standalone data centre units. Through these initiatives, investments worth Rs 21,342 crore and a capacity of 644 megawatts have already been secured, demonstrating strong investor confidence in Uttar Pradesh's potential.
Driving Factors and Economic Impact
A government spokesperson emphasized the critical importance of the data centre industry in today's digital landscape. "Amid rapidly increasing digital usage, rising demand for cloud services and policies promoting data localisation, the importance of the data centre industry cannot be understated," the spokesperson stated. This sentiment underscores the strategic timing of Uttar Pradesh's efforts.
The expansion of the data centre industry is poised to deliver substantial economic benefits. It will not only strengthen the state's digital infrastructure but also create numerous new employment opportunities in high-growth sectors such as information technology, cloud services, networking, and various other technology-based services.
Attracting Major Technology Investments
Currently, major technology companies are showing significant interest in investing in Uttar Pradesh, drawn by the favourable policies and conducive investment environment. The state's proactive approach, including clear regulatory frameworks and financial incentives, is making it an attractive destination for both domestic and international tech firms looking to expand their data infrastructure in India.
This concerted push towards becoming a data economy hub positions Uttar Pradesh at the forefront of India's digital transformation, promising enhanced connectivity, economic growth, and job creation for years to come.
