The Uttar Pradesh government has introduced four schemes offering subsidies to promote indigenous cow breeds and enhance milk production in the state, according to additional chief secretary of animal husbandry, Mukesh Meshram. Meshram stated that these initiatives are designed to bolster the rural economy and encourage dairy farming.
Subsidy Details for Dairy Units
Under the Nandini and Mini Nandini schemes, dairy units can receive up to 50% subsidy. The financial model comprises a 15% beneficiary contribution, a 35% bank loan, and up to 50% government subsidy. Additionally, the Mukhyamantri Swadeshi Gau Samvardhan Yojana provides a subsidy of up to Rs 80,000 for a two-cow unit.
Promotion of Indigenous Breeds
The government is actively promoting indigenous breeds such as Gir, Sahiwal, and Gangatiri. Through the Mukhyamantri Pragatisheel Pashupalak Protsahan Yojana, cattle rearers who maintain indigenous breeds with higher milk yield are offered incentives ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000, Meshram explained.
Achievements So Far
Meshram reported that more than 1,500 units have been established under the Mukhyamantri Swadeshi Gau Samvardhan Yojana, and over 7,500 beneficiaries have received incentives under the Pragatisheel Pashupalak Protsahan Yojana. Furthermore, 72 dairy units have been set up under the Nandini scheme, and 245 under the Mini Nandini scheme.
These schemes are expected to significantly contribute to the growth of the dairy sector and improve the livelihoods of rural farmers in Uttar Pradesh.
