UP Cabinet Greenlights Major Infrastructure Project: Four-Lane Ganga Bridge to Link Kanpur with Trans-Ganga City
In a significant move aimed at enhancing urban connectivity and economic growth, the Uttar Pradesh cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has approved the construction of a new four-lane bridge over the Ganga River. This crucial infrastructure project is designed to seamlessly connect Kanpur city with the emerging Trans-Ganga City, addressing long-standing transportation challenges and fostering regional development.
Project Details and Financial Allocation
The proposed bridge has been allocated a substantial budget of Rs 75,313.2 lakh (approximately Rs 753 crore). Of this total, Rs 46,000 lakh will be funded by the Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Authority (UPSIDA) under the Atal Infrastructure Mission. The remaining amount will be sourced from UPSIDA's own resources, ensuring robust financial backing for the initiative.
Addressing Traffic Congestion and Commuting Woes
Industrial Development Minister Nand Gopal Gupta Nandi emphasized that the bridge is expected to ease daily commuting for approximately 10 lakh (1 million) people, including both residents and tourists. Currently, the only available route between these areas is via the Ganga Barrage, which is already under strain. With the ongoing development of Trans-Ganga City—a planned industrial hub for relocating units from Kanpur Nagar and surrounding regions—traffic pressure from heavy and light vehicles is anticipated to surge, potentially causing severe jams on the existing barrage route.
To mitigate this, the cabinet has prioritized the construction of the new bridge. However, in a strategic twist, Minister Nandi highlighted that instead of a single four-lane bridge merging at one point in Kanpur city—which could lead to excessive traffic density and obstruction—the plan involves building two separate two-lane bridges. These bridges will merge at different intersections within Kanpur, ensuring smoother traffic flow and reducing bottlenecks.
Economic and Developmental Impact
Beyond easing commute, the bridge is projected to significantly boost economic and commercial activities in the region. By improving connectivity, it will facilitate the movement of goods and people, supporting the growth of Trans-Ganga City as an industrial center. This infrastructure upgrade is also expected to spur all-round development in Unnao, Kanpur, and Trans-Ganga City, creating new opportunities for businesses and residents alike.
