Ujjwala Yojana Beneficiaries Face Extended LPG Refill Delays in Lucknow

Despite no formal alterations to LPG booking regulations, beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana in various parts of Lucknow are encountering significant disruptions. Gas agencies are reportedly instructing them to wait up to 35 days before booking a refill, severely impacting daily cooking routines for low-income families.

Consumers Struggle with Unclear Restrictions and Supply Issues

Numerous consumers have expressed frustration over their inability to place refill requests even after the standard waiting period has elapsed. Agency staff frequently cite "internal restrictions" or vague supply chain problems as reasons for the delays. This uncertainty has left many households grappling with meal preparation, compelling some to revert to traditional, less efficient fuels such as coal and firewood.

Personal Accounts Highlight Growing Hardship

In Thakurganj, Shabana Khatoon shared how the unpredictability has disrupted her daily life. Residing in rented accommodation, she is now contemplating a return to her village due to the ongoing fuel crisis. "I can manage somehow, even eat less, but my children cannot," she lamented, underscoring the familial strain caused by the situation.

Rukhsana Salim from Malihabad described the Ujjwala scheme, once a source of relief, as now becoming a significant stressor. "We are neither getting LPG nor a clear response from the agency," she stated, noting that she has resorted to using coal to ensure meals are prepared on time.

Widespread Reports of Refill Difficulties

Residents in Sadar Bazaar have also reported challenges in accessing LPG refills. Baby, who booked a cylinder during Ramazan, revealed that she has yet to receive it. "We were not getting gas regularly. How will we manage now?" she questioned, highlighting the persistent nature of the issue.

In Rajajipuram, several beneficiaries confirmed that deliveries remain pending despite having secured confirmed bookings. Ram Dev voiced a common concern: "If the cylinder does not arrive soon, we will have to switch to a coal stove," indicating a potential shift away from cleaner cooking methods.

Agency Response and Official Stance

Gas agencies have responded to these complaints by clarifying that the waiting period—35 days for households with double connections and 25 days for single connections—applies uniformly to all consumers and is not specifically targeted at Ujjwala beneficiaries. However, this explanation offers little solace to those already facing prolonged delays and heightened anxiety over their cooking fuel supply.

The ongoing situation raises critical questions about the implementation and accessibility of the Ujjwala Yojana in urban areas like Lucknow, where logistical hurdles appear to be undermining the scheme's intended benefits for vulnerable populations.
