Tripura Achieves Major Solar Milestone with PM Surya Ghar Yojana
Agartala: In a significant boost to its renewable energy sector, Tripura has successfully surpassed the 8-megawatt mark in solar power generation under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. This achievement marks a pivotal step toward sustainable energy independence for the state, as traditional power stations grapple with persistent challenges such as natural gas shortages.
Rooftop Solar Emerges as a Reliable Alternative
Across Tripura, households are increasingly transforming into micro power generators, feeding clean and sustainable energy directly into the grid. Biswajit Basu, the managing director of the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), emphasized that rooftop solar installations are emerging as a dependable alternative to conventional power sources. He noted that this shift not only enhances energy security but also promotes environmental conservation.
Widespread Adoption and Government Support
Under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, as many as 2,350 electricity consumers have installed solar panels on rooftops, tin sheds, and open spaces. This collective effort has resulted in a generation of over 8 megawatts of electricity. Basu highlighted that the TSECL has ambitious plans to scale up solar capacity to 50 megawatts by 2027, aiming to further solidify Tripura's position in the renewable energy landscape.
Financial incentives have played a crucial role in this adoption. Basu reported that 2,053 consumers have received government subsidies amounting to Rs 17.27 crore. These subsidies have made solar installations more accessible and affordable for residents, encouraging broader participation in the scheme.
Tangible Benefits for Households
The financial advantages of rooftop solar are becoming increasingly evident. Numerous households have achieved zero electricity bills, significantly reducing their monthly expenses. Additionally, some consumers are earning extra income by supplying surplus power back to the grid, creating a new revenue stream while contributing to the state's energy needs.
This initiative not only addresses energy challenges but also fosters economic empowerment at the grassroots level. As Tripura continues to expand its solar infrastructure, it sets a commendable example for other regions aiming to transition toward renewable energy sources.
