Solar Microgrids Transform Rural Economy in Uttar Pradesh's Paska Village

At the break of dawn in Paska village, Gonda district, Rahul Yadav activates the humming bulk milk chiller with a quiet confidence that has replaced years of uncertainty. Just a few years ago, his mornings began with the disruptive roar of a diesel generator and the constant worry of escalating fuel costs. Today, the same essential work runs entirely on sunlight, marking a profound shift in the village's energy landscape.

From Diesel Dependency to Solar Stability

Rahul Yadav, a 25-year-old entrepreneur, manages a bustling milk collection point where over 150 farmers deliver nearly 2,300 liters of milk daily. Previously, erratic electricity supply forced him to depend entirely on diesel generators, which significantly ate into his profits. With the installation of a solar-powered microgrid by Tata Power through its TP Renewable Microgrid subsidiary, his operational expenses have dramatically decreased, saving him approximately Rs300 every single day. For this first-generation entrepreneur, this transition has meant unprecedented stability and tangible growth opportunities.

He is not alone in experiencing this transformation. Krishna Kumar Vishwakarma, a local welder, vividly recalls how frequent power cuts once dictated his work hours and limited his productivity. Now, with reliable solar energy supply, his monthly savings have reached an impressive Rs10,000. The positive economic effect is clearly visible throughout the village market as well.

Economic Momentum and Extended Business Hours

Salimun, a 22-year-old shopkeeper who sells cosmetics and bangles, reports that her business hours have significantly extended and customer footfall has noticeably improved since the solar microgrid became operational. "With constant and reliable power supply, local business has gained remarkable momentum," she states enthusiastically. This transformation began when TP Renewable Microgrid established a solar plant in the village back in 2020.

Initially starting as a 30kWp installation and later expanded to 50kWp capacity, the solar plant now powers over one hundred consumers, with the majority being small businesses and entrepreneurs. For a remote village like Paska, located approximately 36 kilometers from Gonda town and 156 kilometers from Lucknow, which historically struggled with frequent power outages and seasonal floods, this steady renewable energy source has become the fundamental backbone of economic activity.

Milk chilling units, flour mills, tea stalls, and grocery shops all operate more smoothly and efficiently, significantly reducing operational losses while boosting household incomes across the community.

Local Employment Generation and Technical Opportunities

The solar microgrid project has also generated valuable local employment opportunities. Amar Singh, a 23-year-old holder of an ITI diploma in electrical trades, now works as the village technician responsible for maintaining the solar plant infrastructure. "I didn't have to migrate to distant cities for work. I now have a stable and meaningful job right here in my own village," he explains with evident pride.

Expanding Renewable Solutions Beyond Solar

Beyond solar power generation, Tata Power is actively piloting Bio-CNG and biogas solutions to further deepen rural energy independence and sustainability. In the nearby Nayab Purwa hamlet, farmer Udyabhan Singh, who owns seven cattle, now operates a two-cubic-meter biogas plant that efficiently converts daily waste into usable energy. "Half a quintal of cow dung is generated daily. With this agricultural waste, my entire cooking gas needs are completely met," he states, adding that the resulting slurry is productively used as high-quality organic manure for his fields.

"By strategically merging solar power with innovative Bio-CNG solutions, we effectively tackle immediate energy challenges while simultaneously paving the way for a resilient, self-reliant, and low-carbon future in rural areas. In Paska village, energy is no longer a daily struggle but has become a genuine source of economic empowerment and community development," stated Manoj Gupta, chief executive officer of TP Renewable Microgrid, emphasizing the project's broader vision.
