Saras Fair Inaugurated in Varanasi to Empower Rural Communities

The regional Saras fair commenced on Friday at Sampurnanand Sanskrit University in Varanasi, organized under the auspices of the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana National Rural Livelihood Mission. The event was formally inaugurated by District Panchayat President Poonam Maurya and District Magistrate Satyendra Kumar, marking a significant step towards enhancing economic opportunities for local residents.

Extensive Participation and Diverse Offerings

Featuring an impressive array of products, the fair hosts over 100 stalls from various states including Telangana, Haryana, and Odisha. Visitors can explore a wide range of items such as:

  • Traditional and contemporary food items

Focus on Women's Empowerment and Livelihood Initiatives

During the inauguration, Poonam Maurya emphasized the importance of women's participation in economic activities. She actively encouraged attendees to enroll in the Prime Minister's ambitious Lakhpati programme, which seeks to empower women by helping them achieve annual incomes of one lakh rupees or more through sustainable livelihood projects.

District Magistrate Satyendra Kumar provided insights into the broader impact of livelihood missions in Uttar Pradesh. He revealed that over one crore families in the state are currently engaged in various livelihood activities, underscoring the scale of these initiatives. Specifically in Varanasi, he noted that 1.47 lakh women have already joined under the Livelihood Mission, demonstrating strong local engagement and progress.
