Punjab Wheat Procurement Season to Commence on April 1; Patiala District Reviews Comprehensive Preparations
The government procurement of wheat in Punjab is scheduled to begin on April 1, marking the start of the crucial harvest season. In preparation for this annual event, a significant meeting was convened on Tuesday at the district administrative complex in Patiala to meticulously review all arrangements for wheat handling across the district's markets.
High-Level Meeting Chaired by Deputy Commissioner
The meeting was presided over by Deputy Commissioner Varjit Walia and saw participation from a wide array of stakeholders. Attendees included all Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs), officials from various procurement agencies, commission agents, transporters, and labor contractors. This collaborative gathering aimed to ensure a seamless procurement process from the ground up.
Deputy Commissioner Walia emphasized that the district administration has completed comprehensive arrangements for the wheat procurement during the current harvest season. He assured that all preparations were made well in advance, with a firm commitment to purchase every grain of the farmers' produce on time, thereby eliminating any potential difficulties for them.
Highlighting the importance of agriculture, Walia stated, "Agriculture is the backbone of Punjab, and the responsibility of crop procurement rests heavily on our shoulders." He affirmed that the entire district administration would work diligently to ensure smooth operations in the markets dedicated to wheat procurement.
Detailed Procurement Infrastructure and Targets
The deputy commissioner provided specific details regarding the procurement infrastructure. He announced that procurement agencies have been allocated 108 markets within the district. Additionally, to enhance accessibility and efficiency, 89 temporary purchase centers will be established to facilitate the process.
In terms of volume, Walia noted that procurement agencies purchased 9.21 lakh metric tonnes of wheat during the previous season. For the upcoming season, an estimated 9.13 lakh metric tonnes of wheat is expected to arrive in the markets, indicating a robust harvest.
To support farmers and ensure a conducive environment, arrangements are being meticulously made in the markets for essential amenities. These include cleanliness, provision of drinking water, restrooms, adequate lighting, and security measures to safeguard both the produce and the participants.
Strict Oversight and Quality Assurance Measures
Walia issued strict instructions to officials from the food and civil supplies department, district mandi officers, secretaries of market committees, transport department officials, and heads of procurement agencies. He stressed that there should be no negligence in the arrangements, as Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann is personally overseeing the procurement preparations, underscoring the high priority given to this initiative.
The deputy commissioner directed the SDMs to personally visit the markets and conduct thorough reviews of the arrangements to ensure everything is in order. He also outlined critical quality control measures, stating that weighing scales and moisture meters must be in proper working condition. Adequate arrangements for tarpaulins and crates are also being prioritized to protect the wheat.
Furthermore, Walia mandated that staff of procurement agencies and other relevant officials must be present at their designated stations throughout the procurement season to address any issues promptly.
Appeal to Farmers and Final Preparations
In a message to the farming community, the deputy commissioner appealed to farmers to bring their crops to the markets only after properly drying and cleaning them. This step is crucial to ensure they receive the appropriate price without any complications, thereby maximizing their returns from the harvest.
Adding to the updates, District Food Supply Controller Ravinder Kaur informed the deputy commissioner that arrangements for labor, cartage, and transportation in all markets are in their final stages. Procurement agencies have also arranged the necessary storage bags, completing the logistical chain for a successful procurement season.
This proactive approach by the Patiala district administration reflects a concerted effort to support Punjab's agricultural sector, ensuring that the wheat procurement process is efficient, farmer-friendly, and aligned with the state's economic goals.
