With the Union Budget scheduled for presentation on Sunday, February 1, 2026, citizens across Pune are articulating their hopes and demands for the upcoming financial plan. The expectations span multiple sectors, reflecting the diverse needs of the population as they await the government's fiscal announcements.
Tax Relief and Economic Security
Shivani Awalkanthe, a working professional residing in Rasta Peth, emphasized the need for meaningful tax relief. "As inflation and daily expenses continue to rise, rationalized tax slabs that genuinely reduce the burden on middle-income earners are crucial," she stated. Awalkanthe also highlighted the importance of enhanced deductions for savings, insurance, and retirement planning to ensure long-term economic security for salaried individuals.
Healthcare and Wellness Priorities
Healthcare remains a significant concern among Pune residents. Monica Sharma from Kalyani Nagar advocated for preventive healthcare measures. "The Union Budget should prioritize supporting government-backed Ayurveda, yoga, and wellness centres within residential neighbourhoods," she said. Sharma suggested these services be accessible at minimal or no cost to benefit citizens from all economic backgrounds, addressing stress, anxiety, and lifestyle disorders prevalent in urban areas.
Additionally, Divya Kontam of Sinhagad Road pointed out the rising costs of healthcare and education. "Post-COVID, healthcare and health insurance have become essential rather than optional," she noted, calling for women-centric health insurance reforms and increased tax relief to alleviate financial burdens on families.
Education and Skill Development
Education experts and residents alike are pushing for increased budget allocations to the education sector. Sahil Bista, an education expert, stressed the need for addressing teacher shortages and enhancing the quality of education. "The budget should align with the National Education Policy, focusing on skill development and preparing students for future job markets," he explained.
Bista also emphasized the importance of AI-based learning platforms and cybersecurity training, alongside continued support for initiatives like Atal Tinkering Labs to foster innovation among young minds.
Urban Development and Job Creation
Deepa Rangan, a homemaker from Udhyam Nagar in Pimpri-Chinchwad, highlighted the need for job creation and social security. "With India aiming to be among the top three in growth and development, the budget must allocate funds to strengthen skilling and digital transformation," she said. Rangan also advocated for tax-based incentives to support economic growth and address underdeveloped regions.
Overall Economic Vibrancy
Yasmin Charania, a project consultant, expressed hope for a pro-people budget. "Enough allocation should be made towards health and education, as these sectors consume a significant portion of household income," she remarked. Charania further suggested reducing overall income tax and GST to boost disposable income and revitalize market activity.
