PM Modi to Initiate Major Infrastructure Projects in Varanasi Under Amrit-2.0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to lay the foundation for three significant sewer and drinking water projects in Varanasi, with a total value exceeding Rs 259 crore. These initiatives fall under the Amrit-2.0 scheme and are aimed at addressing critical infrastructure needs in 18 of the most affected wards and extended areas of the Varanasi Municipal Corporation. While the exact date of the Prime Minister's visit remains to be finalized, preparations are underway.

Government Commitment and Funding Details

Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari has confirmed that the government has already disbursed the first instalment of funds, and the corporation has completed all necessary tender formalities. He emphasized that both the central and state governments are actively working to strengthen Varanasi's basic infrastructure, with the pipeline laying work expected to commence shortly.

Mayor Tiwari highlighted the transformative vision behind these projects, stating, "With the vision of Prime Minister Modi and the resolve of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, a revolutionary transformation in the city's drinking water and sewer system is being undertaken. Under their guidance, Kashi is setting new benchmarks of development."

Project Breakdown and Impact on Local Areas

The projects are designed to bring substantial relief to residents, particularly in the extended areas of Ramnagar and Sujabad. A comprehensive network of sewer and water pipelines will be installed in these newly expanded zones.

  • Ramnagar Zone: The government has sanctioned Rs 190 crore for sewer network development, including connections for every household. This involves laying 69.98 km of branch lines and 3.4 km of rising (main) lines across all three wards of Ramnagar. Additionally, a 10 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and two Sewer Pumping Stations (SPS) will be constructed.
  • Sujabad Zone: A plan worth Rs 35 crore has been approved to expand clean drinking water supply. This will provide sewer connections to 13,645 households, addressing long-standing issues.

Addressing Historical Infrastructure Challenges

Mayor Tiwari pointed out that many sewer and drinking water pipelines in Varanasi are nearly 200 years old, leading to serious problems such as sewer overflow and significant water loss. "Due to leakage, 48% of water is lost as line loss," he noted. The new projects in the 18 wards are expected to plug these leaks, enhance water pressure, and ultimately resolve supply woes, marking a milestone in improving living standards.

He further assured that resources for Varanasi's development are secure, citing an order issued by Joint Secretary Devesh Mishra. "These projects will prove to be a milestone in elevating the living standards of the people. The funds sanctioned under Amrit-2.0 will transform the picture of the city's extended areas," Tiwari added, committing to quality-driven and time-bound completion of all works.
