The Karnataka government has announced that open defecation is now prevalent in only 79 villages across the state, based on analysis of data submitted under the central government's Swachh Bharat Mission project. This marks a significant improvement in sanitation coverage.
ODF Village Growth
According to official figures, the number of Open Defecation Free (ODF) villages in Karnataka has surged from 1,688 in April 2022 to 26,405. This dramatic increase effectively limits the problem of open defecation to just 79 villages, showcasing the success of the mission's implementation.
Government Efforts
The state government attributed this achievement to sustained efforts in constructing toilets, behavioral change campaigns, and community participation. The remaining 79 villages are being targeted with intensified measures to achieve complete ODF status.
Officials noted that the Swachh Bharat Mission has been instrumental in driving sanitation infrastructure and awareness. Karnataka's progress aligns with national goals to eliminate open defecation.
The data reflects a positive trend, with the state moving closer to universal sanitation coverage. The government continues to monitor and support the remaining villages to ensure no one is left behind.
