Rs 3,839 Crore Highway to Connect Ujjain with Delhi-Mumbai Expressway for 2028 Kumbh Mela
New Highway to Link Ujjain with Delhi-Mumbai Expressway for Kumbh Mela

Massive Highway Project Approved to Boost Connectivity for Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2028

In a significant infrastructure development, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has greenlit a major highway project worth Rs 3,839.42 crore. This ambitious initiative aims to construct a four-lane corridor that will directly link the holy city of Ujjain with the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway (DME). The project is strategically timed to enhance accessibility for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela in 2028, which is expected to draw massive crowds of pilgrims.

Project Details and Route Specifications

The newly approved corridor spans approximately 80.45 kilometers and will connect key locations including Badnawar, Petlawad, Thandla, and Timarwani. According to NHAI Project Director (Ratlam) Sandeep Patidar, this infrastructure will serve as a critical high-speed gateway, bridging the existing connectivity gap between Ujjain and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. The current intermediate-lane road, which is only 5.5 meters wide, will be upgraded to a modern four-lane highway designed for speeds of 80 to 100 kilometers per hour.

Expected Benefits and Travel Time Reduction

One of the primary advantages of this new highway is the substantial reduction in travel time. Commuters can anticipate saving roughly one hour on their journeys, making travel more efficient and less cumbersome. Additionally, the route is projected to cut the distance by approximately 35 kilometers for travelers moving between Ahmedabad and Bhopal. This improvement will allow vehicles to bypass the heavily congested roads of Indore, thereby alleviating traffic pressure in the region.

Enhanced Regional Connectivity and Economic Impact

The highway is set to significantly boost regional connectivity, particularly for pilgrims and commuters from Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra. By enabling travelers from Gujarat to remain on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway until Thandla instead of exiting at Godhra, access to major industrial hubs and Multi-Modal Logistics Parks (MMLPs) in cities like Indore, Pithampur, Ujjain, and Dewas will be greatly improved. The corridor will also facilitate easier access to the PM Mitra Park in Dhar, supporting economic growth and industrial development in the area.

Construction Timeline and Preparations for Kumbh Mela

NHAI has outlined a clear construction schedule, with tenders set to open on March 18, 2026, and construction work slated to commence on April 1, 2026. The authority aims to have the highway operational by March 2028, just in time for the Simhastha month in April 2028. Ujjain Divisional Commissioner Asheesh Singh emphasized that the city is actively preparing for the anticipated surge in traffic, with this corridor serving as a vital link to manage the influx of an estimated 50 lakh visitors per day during the major holy baths of the Kumbh Mela.

Supporting Infrastructure and Mobility Plans

To complement the new highway and ensure smooth traffic flow during the pilgrimage, the Directorate of Urban Administration and Development has devised a comprehensive Mobility Master Plan. This plan includes the deployment of 2,400 buses, the establishment of a 13.11-kilometer river transport route along the Kshipra River, and the construction of flyovers and underpasses at key locations such as Harifatak Square and Kartik Mela Ground. These measures are designed to effectively manage peak pilgrimage traffic and enhance the overall experience for visitors.
