Meghalaya Chief Minister Stresses Housing as Key to Rural Healthcare Retention
In a significant move to bolster healthcare services in remote regions, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma highlighted on Thursday that enhanced housing facilities are essential for encouraging government physicians and other health workers to remain and serve in rural areas of the state.
Renovation Initiative for Primary Health Centre
The Chief Minister made these remarks after laying the foundation for a renovation project worth Rs 2.98 crore at the Mangsang Primary Health Centre (PHC) in East Garo Hills district. The project includes upgrading the PHC building, constructing staff quarters, and building a yoga-cum-meeting hall.
"Better accommodation will help retain doctors and nurses, ensuring consistent medical services," Sangma wrote on his social media handle, underscoring the direct link between living conditions and workforce stability in healthcare.
Addressing Decades of Service and Growing Needs
Emphasizing the historical context, the CM noted that the Mangsang PHC has served the community for over three decades, making the renovation urgently needed to meet escalating healthcare demands. "The PHC has served the people over three decades and the renovation is much needed to meet the growing healthcare needs in the area," he stated.
He further explained that strengthening primary healthcare infrastructure is a strategic priority for the government, as it reduces the burden on higher-level hospitals and makes healthcare more accessible and affordable for residents.

The improvements aim not only to provide better facilities for medical staff but also to enhance services for villagers in surrounding areas.
