MCD Conducts 7 Anti-Encroachment Drives in Mayapuri

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that it has conducted seven anti-encroachment drives in Mayapuri since March this year. These drives targeted encroachments along 7.2 kilometers of roads, primarily involving automobile repair and scrap units. Over 100 machines and equipment were seized during these operations.

Background of the Case

The NGT had taken suo motu cognizance of a Times of India report from last year, which highlighted the dismantling of end-of-life vehicles in violation of safety and environmental norms. The report, published in August, revealed that workers were using hammers and chisels to break vehicle parts on roadsides. Components such as engines, shock absorbers, silencers, and rims were found lying on roads, causing pollution and obstruction. Workers were also not using protective gear.

Details of the Drives

In a report dated May 28 and shared on June 8, the MCD stated that it had been conducting clearance drives in Mayapuri Phase II in Ward 99 (Hari Nagar). The first drive covered a 1,000-meter stretch in B Block on March 25, during which 30 items, including a four-wheeler, were seized. The most recent drive was carried out on May 15 on a 700-meter stretch in Mayapuri Phase II and adjoining areas, with 20 items seized.

Collaboration with Police

The MCD conducted these encroachment removal drives in association with the Delhi Police. After completion of the drives, letters were sent to the Station House Officer (SHO) of Mayapuri, requesting strict vigil in the area to prevent re-encroachment by illegal vendors.

NGT Observations

In an order dated May 29, the tribunal observed that while MCD officials had removed the entire encroachment, pipe cutting activities continued in the area during the morning hours. The NGT has also summoned the SHO of Mayapuri Police Station in connection with the matter.

These drives are part of ongoing efforts to address environmental violations and ensure compliance with safety norms in the Mayapuri area.
