In a significant push to boost local tourism and foster economic self-reliance, the Mandya district administration has rolled out a targeted subsidy scheme for entrepreneurs from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities. The initiative focuses on setting up mobile canteens at key tourist spots.
Subsidy and Training for 11 Beneficiaries
Deputy Commissioner Kumara, while chairing a review meeting for the 2024–25 financial year subsidies, announced that the district has decided to support 11 eligible beneficiaries under this scheme. Each beneficiary will receive a substantial subsidy of Rs 5 lakh specifically for purchasing a mobile canteen vehicle. To ensure their preparedness, six of these entrepreneurs have already completed a rigorous one-month entrepreneurship training programme. The remaining five are currently undergoing their training in the second phase.
Strict Guidelines for Success and Hygiene
DC Kumara laid down clear directives to ensure the scheme's effectiveness and longevity. He sternly warned against any misuse of the subsidy, emphasising that the funds must be used strictly for the intended entrepreneurial purpose. He also strictly prohibited the transfer of the subsidised vehicles to others.
Based on an analysis of tourism data from the past five years, officials have been instructed to identify suitable high-footfall locations at major tourist destinations where these canteens can operate profitably. Kumara advised the new business owners to focus on serving clean, tasty, and high-quality food, noting that consistency and hygiene are paramount to building a trusted brand.
Focus on Compliance and Public Health
The Deputy Commissioner emphasised critical public health measures. He issued a strong warning against the reuse of cooking oil and called for strict adherence to all food safety norms. Officials from the Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) have been directed to assist beneficiaries in obtaining mandatory licences. Furthermore, Kumara insisted on maintaining a professional dress code while operating the canteens to project a standardised and hygienic image.
The review meeting was attended by key officials including Tourism Department Deputy Director Raghavendra, District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr K Mohan, and representatives from the Food Safety and Standards Authority, underscoring the multi-departmental approach to the scheme's implementation.
