Mandya District Embarks on Major LED Streetlight Conversion Project
In a significant move towards energy efficiency, Deputy Commissioner Kumara of Mandya district has strongly advocated for the replacement of conventional streetlights with modern LED bulbs. This initiative is aimed at conserving energy, slashing maintenance costs, and ensuring long-term durability for the district's lighting infrastructure.
Substantial Financial and Energy Benefits Expected
Currently, urban local bodies within Mandya district allocate approximately Rs 15 crore annually towards electricity expenses for street lighting. With the planned transition to LED technology, electricity consumption is projected to decrease by nearly 58%. This reduction is anticipated to yield estimated annual savings of Rs 7 to 8 crore on power bills, providing a substantial financial relief to municipal budgets.
Comprehensive Implementation Plan Unveiled
During a recent meeting focused on the Centralised Control and Monitoring System (CCMS) for streetlights, Deputy Commissioner Kumara issued directives to officials to convert all existing streetlights across the eight urban local bodies in Mandya district into LED fixtures. The goal is to achieve significant energy savings and enhance operational efficiency.
Under the proposed project, a total of 15,593 conventional streetlights will be replaced with energy-efficient LED bulbs. Additionally, 8,500 new LED streetlights will be installed to expand coverage. The project includes a comprehensive maintenance plan spanning seven years to ensure the lighting system functions smoothly and remains durable over time.
Advanced Monitoring Systems to Boost Efficiency
To further optimize the lighting network, Kumara has instructed officials to install smart meters and implement a CCMS. This advanced system will enable the collection of real-time data on power consumption and the performance of streetlights. By leveraging this technology, authorities will be better equipped to manage the lighting infrastructure effectively, promptly address any issues, and make data-driven decisions for ongoing improvements.
Project Review and Next Steps
Following a detailed review of the project proposal presented by consultants, CESC officials, and representatives from urban local bodies, the Deputy Commissioner has directed concerned officers to initiate all necessary steps. The focus is on ensuring the timely and effective implementation of this ambitious project, which promises to transform Mandya's public lighting into a model of sustainability and cost-efficiency.
