Madurai's Goripalayam Flyover Set for Inauguration After February 10
Public Works Minister E V Velu has confirmed that Chief Minister M K Stalin will officially open a section of the ₹190 crore Goripalayam flyover in Madurai after February 10, once the ongoing construction work is fully completed. The announcement came during a recent inspection of the project, highlighting the government's commitment to improving urban infrastructure in the city.
Inspection and Progress Update
On Sunday, Minister E V Velu, along with Commercial Taxes Minister P Moorthy and District Collector K J Praveen Kumar, conducted a thorough inspection of the 2,100-metre-long flyover at the Goripalayam junction. Velu noted that while the project was initially scheduled for completion within 24 months, it faced delays due to legal complications. However, after resolving these issues, the work has been expedited to meet the new deadline.
The main flyover section, stretching from Tamukkam Junction to Anna Salai, is expected to be finished by February 10. Velu emphasized that Chief Minister Stalin will personally inaugurate this section, given its location in a heavily congested area, which underscores its importance for local traffic management.
Phased Completion and Monitoring
In addition to the main section, the Sellur wing of the flyover is projected to be completed within the next three months, after which it will be opened for public use. To ensure timely progress, the project is under close scrutiny, with chief engineers conducting weekly inspections and coordination meetings held every 15 days by the district collector and corporation officials.
"This is my seventh inspection of the project," Velu stated, demonstrating the ongoing oversight and dedication to delivering the infrastructure on schedule.
Expected Benefits and Broader Development
Once fully operational, the Goripalayam flyover is anticipated to significantly reduce traffic congestion and enhance connectivity across Madurai. Velu cited the example of the previously constructed flyover at Apollo Hospital junction, which has already improved mobility and eased traffic issues for residents.
Furthermore, the minister highlighted broader road development initiatives in the city, noting that various works are currently underway within the corporation limits alone, with an estimated cost of ₹420 crore. He also mentioned that funds have been allocated in three phases for the upgradation of the Vaigai North Bank, indicating a comprehensive approach to urban infrastructure enhancement.
