Kolkata Ration Shops to Stop Flour Supply, Provide Wheat Instead
Kolkata Ration Shops to Stop Flour, Provide Wheat

Kolkata: Food and supplies minister Ashok Kirtania on Wednesday announced that ration shops would no longer supply flour but will provide high-quality wheat to ensure better public health and transparency.

After his swearing-in, Kirtania said the department would for now distribute the flour stock still remaining in government warehouses. "Flour will not be procured. We will not take any risk on the health of the common man," the minister stated. This decision is part of a broader "cleansing process" initiated by Kirtania, who vowed to uproot the irregularities that have long plagued the ration system.

The shift from flour to wheat aims to eliminate potential adulteration and ensure that beneficiaries receive unprocessed grains, which are less susceptible to contamination. The minister emphasized that the move would enhance nutritional value and restore trust in the public distribution system.

Kirtania also outlined plans to streamline supply chains and introduce stricter quality checks at all levels. He warned of strict action against officials found guilty of malpractices. The remaining flour stock will be cleared within a specified timeline before the complete transition to wheat distribution.

This policy change is expected to benefit millions of ration card holders across Kolkata, providing them with better quality staple food. The government will also launch awareness campaigns to educate beneficiaries about the benefits of whole wheat over refined flour.
