Kanpur Nagar Emerges as Solar Power Hub in Uttar Pradesh
Kanpur Nagar has achieved a significant milestone by securing the second position in the state of Uttar Pradesh for electricity generation through solar rooftops. Lucknow holds the top spot, while Varanasi follows in third place. This ranking underscores the city's rapid progress in adopting renewable energy solutions and highlights growing public participation in solar initiatives.
Impressive Growth Under PM Surya Ghar Yojana
The expansion of solar energy in Kanpur Nagar has been accelerated under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana. Electricity generation from solar rooftops installed on residential buildings has now surpassed the 100-megawatt mark. As of April 14, the district has recorded a power generation capacity of 103 megawatts through 29,304 installations. This substantial capacity reflects a robust shift towards clean energy and sustainable practices within the community.
Steady Pace of Installations and Government Review
During a recent meeting held at the New Auditorium in Sarsaiya Ghat, district magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh reviewed the PM Surya Ghar Scheme. Officials reported that the pace of solar rooftop installations in the district remains consistent, with an average of 108 installations being carried out daily. Detailed monthly figures show 2,573 homes equipped in February, 3,215 in March, and 1,515 up to April 14, demonstrating sustained momentum.
Inclusion in City Acceleration Program
Kanpur Nagar has been included under the national City Acceleration Program, which aims to develop selected urban areas as Solar Cities. Forty cities across India have been chosen for this initiative, including Ayodhya, Varanasi, Lucknow, Kanpur Nagar, and Prayagraj from Uttar Pradesh. The program focuses on enhancing solar infrastructure and promoting renewable energy adoption in urban settings.
Awareness Campaign and Future Directions
To further boost participation, an awareness campaign is scheduled from April 20 to April 26 in urban areas. This campaign will utilize the ‘Surya Rath’ to inform residents about the benefits of the PM Surya Ghar Yojana and encourage them to obtain solar connections. District magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh has directed officials to ensure the scheme's benefits reach the maximum number of eligible families, emphasizing that the process should be simple, transparent, and time-bound for effective implementation and expansion.
