The Jharkhand government has intensified its disaster response following unseasonal rain and hailstorms that caused significant damage to crops across several districts. Disaster Management and Health Department Minister Irfan Ansari has directed deputy commissioners (DCs) to submit detailed loss assessment reports within three days.
Relief Measures Announced
To strengthen relief operations, the minister announced an allocation of Rs 100 crore from the disaster fund for immediate response and management. Additionally, another Rs 100 crore has been earmarked for the financial year 2026-27 to compensate families affected by disasters such as heavy rain, storms, snakebites, road accidents, gas leaks, and heatwaves. A separate allocation of Rs 150 crore has been made for disaster preparedness and contingency planning.
Speaking after chairing a review meeting on Thursday, Ansari emphasized, "No affected farmer will be left alone. Delay or negligence in relief operations will not be tolerated."
Extent of Damage
The hailstorm, which struck the state on Wednesday, caused widespread damage to mango, litchi, watermelon, muskmelon, vegetables, maize, and pulses. Standing crops and fruit-bearing trees were also severely affected. The minister stated that DCs have been instructed to conduct on-site inspections, monitor vulnerable areas, and activate administrative machinery immediately in case of emergencies.
This proactive approach aims to ensure timely relief and minimize the impact on farmers and affected families across Jharkhand.
