Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0: Tap Water for All Rural Homes by 2028

Union Cabinet Greenlights Ambitious Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0

In a landmark decision aimed at transforming rural India's water infrastructure, the Union Cabinet has given its official approval to the second phase of the flagship Jal Jeevan Mission. This ambitious initiative sets a clear and definitive target: to ensure that every single rural household across the nation has access to a functional tap water connection by December 2028.

Madhya Pradesh Leads with Immediate Implementation

Demonstrating swift action, the state government of Madhya Pradesh signed a crucial Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Central Government on the very first day following the cabinet's approval. This proactive step positions Madhya Pradesh at the forefront of the mission's rollout.

Under this agreement, the state is slated to receive a substantial central assistance package amounting to approximately ₹19,000 crore. This significant financial infusion is earmarked specifically for the development and enhancement of drinking water supply systems in its rural areas.

A Pivotal Step for Public Health and Development

Chief Minister Dr. Yadav hailed the move as a significant step towards a fundamental goal: providing safe and clean drinking water to rural populations. The mission addresses a critical public health need and is expected to have far-reaching impacts on rural development and quality of life.

The Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 builds upon the foundation of its predecessor, focusing on:

  • Creating sustainable and reliable tap water supply infrastructure.
  • Ensuring the quality and safety of the drinking water provided.
  • Promoting community participation in the management of water resources.

This cabinet approval marks a renewed and accelerated commitment from the government to bridge the urban-rural divide in basic amenities and fulfill the promise of 'Har Ghar Jal' (Water in Every Home) for India's villages.
