IIT Indore to Lead Development of Statewide EV Charging Protocol After Deadly Fire
The Madhya Pradesh government has announced a critical initiative to enhance electric vehicle (EV) safety, partnering with the Indian Institute of Technology, Indore (IIT Indore) to create a comprehensive standard operating procedure (SOP) for EV charging in residential areas. This move comes in direct response to a devastating residential fire in Brijeshwari Annexe, Indore, which resulted in the tragic loss of eight lives.
High-Level Task Force Launches Probe into Indore Fire Tragedy
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has established a high-level task force to investigate the catastrophic incident. Additional Chief Secretary Anupam Rajan and Special Director General of Police (Administration) Adarsh Katiyar initiated the probe with a detailed site inspection of the affected area. Rajan described the event as "extremely tragic" and emphasized the state's primary objective: ensuring such a disaster is never repeated.
"We will conduct a comprehensive forensic investigation with the assistance of IIT experts and technical specialists," Rajan stated. He added that a dedicated meeting with EV experts will be convened to analyze why these incidents occur during charging and to pinpoint the specific technical failures involved.
Broad Investigation to Cover EV Infrastructure and Safety Measures
The investigation extends beyond the specific Pugalia residence where the fire originated, examining the broader implications of home-based EV infrastructure across Madhya Pradesh. Key outcomes of this probe will include:
- Root cause analysis investigating every angle, from vehicle battery chemistry to domestic wiring and charging hardware.
- Developing an SOP for EV charging in residential areas to be implemented statewide.
- Preparing potential guidelines for high-rise and high-density residential colonies regarding multi-vehicle charging points.
Officials examined the charred remains of the EV and the building's electrical circuitry to understand how the fire breached the structure's safety defenses so rapidly. Katiyar noted that the forensic evidence collected will be pivotal in shaping future fire safety regulations for modern 'smart homes' that utilize high-draw electrical appliances and EVs.
Statewide Implementation and Expert Collaboration
The state government plans to hold meetings with experts to finalize the SOP, which will be rolled out across Madhya Pradesh. This proactive approach aims to standardize safe EV charging practices, mitigate risks, and prevent similar tragedies in the future. The collaboration with IIT Indore underscores a commitment to leveraging technical expertise for public safety enhancements.
