In a significant move to modernize its water-based infrastructure, the Himachal Pradesh government has entered into a strategic partnership with the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI). The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was officially signed on Friday, marking a pivotal step towards enhancing the state's inland waterways network.
Formal Agreement at Kochi Meeting
The agreement was inked during the 3rd Inland Waterways Development Council (IWDC) meeting held in Kochi, Kerala. This high-level session brought together key stakeholders to deliberate on India's inland water transport initiatives, with discussions taking place aboard a cruise vessel to underscore the maritime focus.
Leadership and Collaboration
The meeting was chaired by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, and attended by Himachal Pradesh's Deputy Chief Minister, Mukesh Agnihotri. Their presence highlighted the collaborative efforts between the central and state governments to formalize and advance waterway development projects.
Strategic Projects Highlighted
During the proceedings, Sonowal emphasized the potential of river cruise and religious tourism circuits in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. He outlined specific projects aimed at leveraging the region's natural and cultural assets for sustainable growth.
Key Waterway Developments
Ravi River (National Waterway–84): This waterway is currently being developed for river cruises, with plans to connect Ranjit Sagar Dam to Chamera Dam. The first jetty is expected to be operational by the end of January, facilitating tourism and transport activities.
Sutlej River (National Waterway–98): Authorities are exploring this river to create a network linking spiritual sites across Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. Notable destinations include Tatapani, Naina Devi Temple, Anandpur Sahib, and Kiratpur Sahib. A feasibility study is currently underway to assess the viability and impact of this initiative.
State's Central Role and Support Needs
Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri underscored Himachal Pradesh's crucial position in national inland waterway projects, noting that many rivers originate within the state. He called for enhanced technical and financial support to ensure the success of these endeavors.
Eco-Friendly Initiatives
Agnihotri specifically advocated for the introduction of hydro-electric catamaran vessels, which are better suited to the hill region's delicate ecosystem. He reaffirmed the state government's commitment to promoting eco-friendly inland water transport and tourism development.
