Himachal Pradesh Puts Hydropower Projects on Hold Over BBMB Dues
In a significant move, the Himachal Pradesh government has decided to halt the proposed Kishau and Renuka Dam hydropower projects until neighboring states provide concrete assurances to clear long-pending arrears owed to the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu made this announcement on Tuesday, emphasizing the state's firm stance on securing its rightful financial dues.
Climate Change and Green Initiatives Take Center Stage
During an event in Shimla, CM Sukhu released a report titled 'Scientific Assessment of Tackling Non-CO2 Emissions: Pathways for Himachal Pradesh.' He highlighted the severe impacts of climate change, noting unprecedented events such as cloudbursts, flash floods, landslides, and shrinking glaciers. Referring to the 2023 disaster, Sukhu pointed out that over 23,000 houses were destroyed, calling these incidents clear warning signals that demand urgent remedial action.
Describing Himachal Pradesh as the "soul of the Himalayas," Sukhu stressed that any ecological disturbance would have serious consequences not only for the state but for the entire nation. To address these challenges, the state government is committed to making Himachal Pradesh the first 'Green Energy State' in India and has initiated various steps in this direction.
Memorandums of Agreement Signed for Medicinal Plant Cultivation
At the same event, two memorandums of agreement were signed to promote the cultivation and conservation of medicinal plants. The first agreement is with Dabur India Limited, which will supply 12 lakh saplings annually, totaling 1.2 crore over 10 years. These saplings are tailored to different agro-climatic zones, including species like amla and harad in lower hills and jatamansi and kutki in higher regions.
The second agreement focuses on Solan district, covering six medicinal species and benefiting at least 225 women farmers across 108 bighas in its initial phase. This initiative aims to boost local agriculture and support sustainable practices.
Ongoing Discussions and Future Prospects
Despite the suspension of the hydropower projects, CM Sukhu noted that there are encouraging signs in ongoing discussions with neighboring states regarding the BBMB dues. He asserted that Himachal Pradesh is actively pursuing its claims and remains hopeful for a resolution that supports the state's development and environmental goals.
These combined efforts underscore the state's dual focus on addressing financial disputes and advancing green initiatives to combat climate change and promote ecological sustainability.
