The Haryana education department has announced a plan to upskill four to five trained graduate teachers from every block in each district as 'master trainers' for cooking staff. This initiative marks a significant shift in the implementation of the midday meal scheme across the state.
New Training Model
Under the new model, the department will no longer directly train cook-cum-helpers. Instead, selected teachers will be responsible for imparting lessons on nutrition, health, and hygiene to the cooking staff. The teachers nominated for this role will preferably be those teaching home science, as they possess a fundamental understanding of food science, nutrition, and health protocols.
Role of Master Trainers
Once trained, these master trainers will guide the cook-cum-helpers on how to prepare meals hygienically. This approach is expected to significantly improve the overall quality of food served in government schools. The department aims to revamp the midday meal scheme by ensuring that students receive a balanced, safe, and nutritious diet.
Expected Impact
Education officials believe that better meal quality will have a direct impact on student engagement and increase attendance. The midday meal scheme currently serves students from Class I to Class VIII, with a pre-set menu designed to provide a variety of meals throughout the week.
Implementation Process
A senior education officer stated that the department has requested lists of teachers from all districts to begin the training process. This move marks a shift towards professionalizing the meal preparation process in schools, ensuring that every child has access to the fuel they need to succeed academically.
