Gujarat Government Takes Proactive Steps to Mitigate LPG and Kerosene Shortages
The Gujarat government announced on Sunday a comprehensive initiative to address the ongoing shortage of LPG cylinders, attributed to the conflict in West Asia. This effort includes providing LPG cylinders to canteens operated by the state labour and employment department and various social institutions. Additionally, a special provision has been made for workers, with the distribution of 5-kg cylinders to support their needs.
Extensive Distribution of LPG Cylinders
So far, the state has successfully distributed more than 54,000 of these 5-kg cylinders, ensuring that industrial workers and other beneficiaries have access to essential cooking fuel. The government emphasized that these measures are crucial in light of the global supply disruptions caused by the West Asia conflict, which has led to significant shortages in the region.
Kerosene Distribution System for Rural Areas
In parallel, the Gujarat government has established a robust system for kerosene distribution in rural areas. This initiative is being coordinated with oil marketing companies and the kerosene dealers association to ensure efficient delivery. The central government has allocated 1,452 kilolitres (KL) of kerosene to the state, with the state government further distributing 36 KL across all districts.
Under this scheme, every family in rural Gujarat will be eligible to receive 5 litres of kerosene, while institutions will be allocated 25 litres. To facilitate storage and distribution, two depots have been designated in Baroda and Palanpur, and kerosene will be made available from one petrol pump in every taluka.
Pricing and Economic Impact
The pricing for kerosene has been carefully determined, taking into account transportation and other associated expenses. It has been set between 61.4 and 66.1 rupees per litre, ensuring affordability for rural households. The government reported that these measures have contributed to very low migration of workers in the Surat industrial zone, which includes areas like Valsad and Navsari, indicating stability in the labor market despite the fuel shortages.
Government Oversight and Coordination
Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi recently held a meeting with district administration officers and representatives from industries in South Gujarat. The purpose of this meeting was to assess the availability of LPG cylinders for workers in industrial units and to ensure that the distribution systems are functioning effectively. This proactive approach highlights the government's commitment to supporting both urban and rural communities during this challenging period.
