Goa Chief Minister Announces Major Social Security Allowance Hikes Following BJP Electoral Strategy
In a significant move mirroring successful electoral strategies from Maharashtra and Bihar, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has announced substantial increases in social security allowances for women and senior citizens across the state.
Dayanand Social Security Scheme Enhanced
The Chief Minister declared a notable increase in the monthly allowance under the Dayanand Social Security Scheme (DSSS), which has been operational for twenty-five years. This long-standing program provides financial support ranging between Rs 2,500 and Rs 3,500 monthly to senior citizens, widows, and adults and children with disabilities.
A substantial provision of Rs 479 crore has been allocated in the budget specifically for this enhanced scheme, marking a significant commitment to Goa's vulnerable populations.
Griha Aadhar Scheme Receives Boost
Simultaneously, Sawant announced that the monthly allowance under the Griha Aadhar scheme will also see a considerable hike. This scheme, introduced in 2012, specifically targets home-makers from middle, lower-middle, and economically disadvantaged sections of society, aiming to help them maintain a reasonable standard of living for their families.
The government has allocated a budget of Rs 330 crore for the Griha Aadhar scheme enhancements, bringing the total allocation for both social security initiatives to Rs 809 crore.
Digital Transformation for Senior Citizens
In addition to financial increases, the Chief Minister revealed that the process of issuing senior citizens' identity cards will be fully digitized starting this year. This modernization effort aims to streamline access to benefits and services for elderly residents across Goa.
Comprehensive Support Initiatives
The announcements extended beyond direct financial assistance:
- An allocation of Rs 1 crore has been designated for providing financial assistance to palliative care centers throughout the state
- The government plans to establish additional homes for the elderly across different talukas in Goa
- Financial assistance will be provided to organize addiction-free programs for both citizens and organizations
Recognition for Extraordinary Contributions
In a separate but related development, Chief Minister Sawant announced the Gomanta Bhushan Award scheme, which will provide a cash award of Rs 1 lakh to recognize Goans who have made extraordinary contributions in various fields including:
- Social work
- Medicine
- Other significant areas benefiting the state
This comprehensive package of social welfare measures represents a strategic approach to governance, drawing inspiration from successful political strategies while addressing the specific needs of Goa's population. The digitization of senior citizen services and expanded support for palliative care and elderly homes demonstrate a holistic approach to social security beyond mere financial assistance.
