Free LPG Cylinders for Delhi Ration Card Holders Announced

Delhi Government Announces Free LPG Cylinder Scheme for Festival Seasons

In a significant welfare move, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has unveiled a new initiative to provide free LPG cylinders to eligible households during major festivals. The announcement was made on Tuesday following a crucial cabinet meeting chaired by the chief minister herself.

Direct Financial Support for Cooking Fuel

The Delhi cabinet has approved a comprehensive scheme that will transfer Rs 853 directly to the bank accounts of beneficiaries through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. This amount represents the current market cost of a standard LPG cylinder and will be credited ahead of the Holi festival to ensure timely access to cooking fuel.

Chief Minister Gupta emphasized during her briefing that this initiative aims to provide substantial relief to families during festive periods when cooking demands typically increase. The government has allocated a substantial budget of Rs 242 crore specifically for implementing this free gas cylinder scheme across the national capital.

Comprehensive Coverage for Multiple Fuel Users

What makes this scheme particularly inclusive is its extension to households using piped natural gas (PNG) connections. Eligible ration card holders with PNG setups will receive equivalent financial support, ensuring that no beneficiary is excluded based on their cooking fuel infrastructure.

The eligibility criteria focus specifically on households possessing valid ration cards, creating a targeted approach to welfare distribution. This systematic method ensures that the benefits reach those who need them most while maintaining transparency in the allocation process.

Implementation Timeline and Festival Focus

The scheme has been strategically timed around two of India's most significant festivals:

  • Holi celebrations: Beneficiaries will receive the amount in their accounts before the festival
  • Diwali preparations: Similar support will be provided during the festival of lights

This dual-festival approach recognizes the increased domestic activity during these periods and provides meaningful support when households face additional financial pressures. The direct bank transfer mechanism eliminates intermediaries and ensures that the full benefit reaches intended recipients without leakage or delay.

The announcement represents a continuation of Delhi's commitment to social welfare programs that directly impact household economics. By addressing cooking fuel costs during peak consumption periods, the government aims to reduce financial strain on families while promoting cleaner cooking methods across the city.
