Maharashtra CM Launches Pioneering Heat Resilience Centre at IIM Nagpur
In a significant move to address the escalating threat of heatwaves, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Heat Resilience and Sustainable Cooling at the Indian Institute of Management Nagpur (IIM-N). The virtual inauguration ceremony was conducted from the Sahyadri Guest House on Monday, marking a crucial step in fortifying the state's preparedness against extreme temperatures.
Strategic Focus on Vulnerable Regions
The newly established centre is a collaborative initiative with the Natural Resources Defence Council (NRDC), an international environmental advocacy group. Its primary mission is to develop comprehensive strategies for managing and adapting to extreme heat conditions, with particular emphasis on the Vidarbha region and other areas identified as highly vulnerable to heatwaves.
Chief Minister Fadnavis outlined the centre's immediate objectives, stating that it will initially conduct thorough reviews of existing heat action plans and urban climate strategies. Following this assessment phase, the centre will provide essential technical support for implementing these plans across selected cities and districts throughout Maharashtra.
Integration with State Disaster Management Framework
According to official statements, this Centre of Excellence represents just the beginning of a broader disaster preparedness initiative. The facility is scheduled for eventual integration into the proposed State Institute of Disaster Management (SIDM), which is currently under development at the MIHAN (Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur) complex in Nagpur.
The government has approved an initial financial outlay of 184 crore rupees for this comprehensive project, which will house multiple specialized centres focused on various aspects of disaster preparedness and response. This substantial investment underscores the administration's commitment to building climate resilience infrastructure.

The establishment of this centre at IIM Nagpur represents a strategic partnership between government institutions and academic expertise.
