Delhi Government Unveils Comprehensive Khadi Promotion Strategy
The Delhi government is implementing a multifaceted plan to revitalize the khadi sector through educational initiatives and substantial artisan support programs. This strategic move aims to reconnect younger generations with India's heritage fabric while creating sustainable economic opportunities for thousands of local artisans.
Khadi Awareness Campaign in Educational Institutions
In a significant educational outreach effort, the Delhi administration is developing a detailed action plan to introduce khadi to students across city schools. While the government has approved the proposal to promote khadi in educational settings, officials have clarified that physical khadi outlets will not be established on school campuses.
Instead, schools will host specialized exhibitions, conduct awareness sessions, and organize workshops that explore khadi's rich historical significance, its pivotal role in India's freedom movement, and its contemporary relevance in sustainable fashion. Students will learn about khadi as an eco-friendly, hand-spun, and handwoven textile that supports rural livelihoods and represents environmental consciousness.
This initiative aligns with the central government's broader focus on strengthening the khadi sector and encouraging the use of indigenous products. By targeting educational institutions, the Delhi government aims to cultivate appreciation for khadi among young consumers who represent future market demand.
Delhi Khadi Kaushal Vikas Yojana: Empowering Artisans
Complementing the school outreach program, the Delhi government has announced the ambitious Delhi Khadi Kaushal Vikas Yojana, designed to benefit more than 16,000 artisans across the capital. Industries Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa emphasized that this comprehensive scheme combines skill development, financial support, tool kit distribution, and digital market access through an innovative e-catalogue platform.
"The scheme will bring dignity, sustainable income, and long-term economic security to more than 16,000 families in Delhi," Minister Sirsa stated, highlighting the program's potential to transform artisans into self-reliant entrepreneurs.
Delhi Khadi and Village Industries Board (DKVIB) Managing Director K Mahesh provided implementation details, noting that the scheme will be rolled out during the 2025–26 and 2026–27 fiscal years. Eligibility requires participants to have resided in Delhi for at least five years, ensuring benefits reach established community members.
Comprehensive Training and Support Structure
The artisan development program encompasses multiple vocational trades within the khadi and village industries sector, including Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), merchandiser training, documentation executive roles, IT help desk operations, self-employed tailoring, pattern mastering, and fashion clothing production.
"These courses are specifically designed to enhance employability and promote self-employment within the Khadi and Village Industries sector," explained Managing Director Mahesh, emphasizing the practical orientation of the training curriculum.
Participants will receive structured training accompanied by a daily stipend of ₹400, with meals provided during instructional sessions. Upon completion, artisans will receive free tool kits to facilitate immediate self-employment opportunities, creating a complete support ecosystem from training to enterprise launch.
Digital Transformation Through E-Catalogue Platform
A cornerstone innovation of the scheme is the development of an e-catalogue platform that will provide trained artisans with digital visibility and direct market access. This technological component addresses traditional marketing challenges faced by khadi producers and connects them with broader consumer bases.
The Delhi Khadi and Village Industries Board will oversee implementation to ensure transparency, effective execution, and measurable outcomes. This digital marketplace represents a significant modernization of khadi distribution channels while preserving the fabric's artisanal heritage.
Together, these initiatives—the school awareness program and artisan development scheme—create a holistic approach to khadi promotion that addresses both demand generation through youth education and supply enhancement through artisan empowerment, positioning khadi as both a cultural treasure and viable economic sector for Delhi's future.
