The Delhi government has announced that the registration of e-rickshaws will begin from May 15 under the new 'One Driver, One Vehicle' model. This initiative aims to bring transparency and accountability to the e-rickshaw sector in the national capital.
Key Features of the New Model
Under the 'One Driver, One Vehicle' policy, each e-rickshaw will be linked to a single driver. This move is expected to curb unauthorized operations and ensure that drivers are properly licensed and vehicles are roadworthy. The registration process will be mandatory for all e-rickshaws operating in Delhi.
Registration Process
E-rickshaw owners and drivers will need to apply online through the transport department's portal. The process will include verification of documents such as Aadhaar card, driving license, and vehicle purchase invoice. After successful verification, a unique registration number will be issued.
Benefits for Drivers and Commuters
The new model is designed to benefit both drivers and passengers. Drivers will get formal recognition and access to government schemes, while commuters can expect safer and more reliable services. The government also plans to introduce fare meters and GPS tracking in the future.
Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot stated that the initiative will help in regulating the e-rickshaw sector, which has seen rapid growth in recent years. He emphasized that the move will also help in reducing traffic violations and improving road safety.
The Delhi government has set a deadline for existing e-rickshaws to register by June 30, after which strict action will be taken against unregistered vehicles. The transport department will conduct awareness campaigns to ensure maximum compliance.
