Coal Gasification Critical for India's Energy Security and Industrial Growth
Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy declared on Sunday that coal gasification will play a pivotal role in enhancing India's energy security, reducing import dependence, and supporting robust industrial growth. The renewed emphasis on this technology has gained urgency amid the ongoing Middle East conflict, which has triggered a surge in global energy prices, highlighting vulnerabilities in supply chains.
Transformative Technology for Cleaner Energy
Speaking at the Bharat Electricity Summit 2026, Minister Reddy described coal gasification as a transformative technology that converts coal into syngas. This syngas can then be utilized to produce cleaner fuels, essential chemicals, fertilizers, and hydrogen. This approach enables more efficient and sustainable utilization of India's abundant domestic coal resources while simultaneously strengthening economic resilience against external shocks.
Reddy underscored India's heavy reliance on energy imports, presenting stark statistics: the nation imports approximately 83% of its crude oil, 50% of its natural gas, and over 90% of its methanol and fertilizer requirements. This substantial import burden makes achieving energy security a strategic national priority.
National Mission and Substantial Incentives
To accelerate the adoption of coal gasification, the Central Government has launched the National Coal Gasification Mission with an ambitious target of achieving 100 million tonnes of coal gasification capacity by the year 2030.
"An incentive framework of Rs 8,500 crore has been introduced to support both public and private sector projects," Reddy announced. He added that several large-scale initiatives are already in progress, with total planned investments exceeding a remarkable Rs 64,000 crore.
Advanced Techniques and Collaborative Ecosystem
The minister also highlighted advanced technological avenues such as Underground Coal Gasification, which has the potential to tap into previously inaccessible coal reserves while concurrently lowering the environmental footprint of extraction and processing.
Calling for enhanced collaboration, Reddy noted that coal gasification spans multiple critical sectors including power generation, oil and gas, and fertilizers. He stressed that realizing its full potential requires a coordinated ecosystem involving industry leaders, academic institutions, innovative start-ups, and dedicated research organizations.
Government Commitment and Future Vision
Reiterating the government's steadfast commitment, the minister promised streamlined regulatory approvals, supportive policies, and continued incentives to encourage early participation and attract significant investment into the sector.
Expressing strong confidence in India's potential, Minister Reddy concluded that through sustained innovation, the development of indigenous technologies, and coordinated national efforts, India can emerge as a global leader in clean coal technologies. This leadership would directly advance the nation's goals of energy security, environmental sustainability, and economic self-reliance, creating a more resilient future.
