Chhattisgarh Unveils Infrastructure-Focused Budget for 2026-27
In a significant move to bolster development, the Chhattisgarh government has placed infrastructure at the forefront of its 2026-27 budget. The budget, announced by State Finance Minister OP Choudhary at the new Vidhan Sabha building in Nava Raipur for the first time, outlines a comprehensive strategy targeting roads, irrigation, drinking water, airports, and power networks.
Massive Road Network Expansion
The centerpiece of the budget is a substantial ₹9,450 crore allocation for the Public Works Department. This funding is dedicated to the continued and extensive expansion of the state's road network. A key initiative under this is the ₹200-crore Mukhyamantri Drutgami Sadak Sampark Yojana, which aims to construct high-speed 2- and 4-lane corridors. Additionally, ₹50 crore has been set aside for building bridges and roads in unconnected remote villages.
This dual approach highlights the government's commitment to upgrading major transportation routes while simultaneously enhancing last-mile connectivity in interior and tribal areas.
Water Infrastructure Investments
Water infrastructure forms the second major pillar of the capital push. The budget provides ₹3,500 crore for the Water Resources Department and nearly ₹4,000 crore for Public Health Engineering works. These allocations are focused on expanding irrigation systems and improving drinking water supply networks across the state.
Complementing this, around ₹3,000 crore has been earmarked for rural infrastructure and ₹2,150 crore for urban development. These investments underscore an effort to strengthen both agricultural resilience and urban services, addressing critical needs in both sectors.
Aviation and Power Sector Upgrades
Connectivity efforts extend to aviation, with ₹80 crore allocated for infrastructure development at Bilaspur, Ambikapur, and Jagdalpur airports. This initiative is designed to support regional integration, particularly benefiting tribal and interior districts by improving air access.
In the power sector, targeted upgrades include ₹100 crore for establishing 90 new 33/11 KV substations to strengthen distribution networks. Furthermore, ₹400 crore has been allocated for the PM Surya Ghar free electricity scheme, aimed at expanding rooftop solar adoption and promoting renewable energy.
Overall, the Chhattisgarh budget for 2026-27 reflects a strategic focus on infrastructure as a driver for economic growth and improved quality of life.
