Union Cabinet Greenlights Major Metro Extension in Gujarat

The Union Cabinet, in a significant move to bolster urban infrastructure, has granted approval for the extension of the metro corridor from GIFT City to Shahpur. This project will be executed under the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRC), marking a pivotal development in the state's transportation network.

Project Details and Financial Outlay

The approved extension spans 3.33 kilometres and will feature three elevated stations along its route. With an estimated cost of Rs 1,067.35 crore, the project is scheduled for completion in approximately four years, as per the official cabinet release issued on Tuesday.

Expected Passenger Traffic and Connectivity Benefits

Once operational, the extended corridor is projected to serve around 23,702 passengers daily by 2029, with this number expected to surge to nearly 58,059 passengers by 2041. This extension is anticipated to significantly strengthen connectivity between Ahmedabad and the GIFT region, facilitating smoother travel for commuters.

The improved access is likely to benefit several multinational companies, educational institutions, and commercial centres situated along the proposed route. It will ease daily commuting between Ahmedabad and GIFT City, catering to travel needs related to business, employment, and education, thereby enhancing overall network integration and passenger convenience.

Employment Generation and Economic Impact

During the construction phase, the project is estimated to generate approximately 1,000 jobs, providing a boost to local employment. Post-completion, an additional 250 people are expected to be employed in operations and maintenance roles. Beyond these direct employment opportunities, the project is likely to create numerous indirect jobs through allied activities, contributing to regional economic growth.

Implementation and Governance

The extension will be implemented by the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRC), which operates as a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat. This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of both central and state governments to advancing public transportation infrastructure in Gujarat.

This strategic initiative not only aims to improve mobility but also supports sustainable urban development by reducing traffic congestion and promoting efficient transit solutions. The approval reflects a forward-looking approach to addressing the growing transportation demands in one of India's key economic regions.
