Union Budget 2026 Boosts Railway Expansion in Himachal Pradesh with Rs 2,911 Crore Allocation
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Monday that the Union Budget has allocated a substantial Rs 2,911 crore for railway expansion in the hill state of Himachal Pradesh. This allocation marks a significant increase, being 27 times higher than the funds provided during the Congress-led governments at the Centre, highlighting a major push for infrastructure development in the region.
Ongoing Projects and Future Plans
Vaishnaw revealed that railway projects worth Rs 17,711 crore are currently underway in Himachal Pradesh. These initiatives are designed to significantly strengthen the rail network, making travel easier and safer for the general public. The government is investing heavily in the construction of new railway lines, station modernisation, and enhancement of safety infrastructure to transform connectivity in the state.
Amrit Bharat Station Scheme and Station Redevelopment
Referring to the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, the minister stated that four railway stations in Himachal Pradesh have been selected under this scheme, with an outlay of Rs 46 crore. The redevelopment work at Baijnath–Paprola and Amb Andaura railway stations has already been completed, showcasing progress in modernising key transit points. Additionally, a pair of Vande Bharat Express trains will be operated in the state to improve passenger experience, offering faster and more comfortable travel options.
Achievements in Railway Infrastructure
Himachal Pradesh has achieved 100 percent electrification of its railway network, a milestone that enhances efficiency and sustainability. Since 2014, around 16 kilometres of new railway lines have been constructed, and 26 flyovers and underpasses have been built to improve rail safety and reduce congestion. These developments are part of a broader effort to upgrade the state's transport infrastructure.
Challenges and Call for Cooperation
Despite these advancements, Vaishnaw expressed concern over inadequate cooperation from the state government in executing railway projects. He urged the Chief Minister to extend full support to the Railways Ministry to ensure timely completion of ongoing and proposed projects. The minister emphasised that faster execution would directly benefit the people of Himachal Pradesh, facilitating economic growth and improved accessibility.
This budget allocation and ongoing projects underscore the central government's commitment to enhancing railway infrastructure in Himachal Pradesh, with a focus on safety, modernisation, and connectivity for residents and tourists alike.
