Bihar Govt Raises Wheat Procurement Target to 1.8 Lakh MT

The Bihar state government has significantly increased its wheat procurement target for the current season. Following approval from the central government, the procurement target has been raised from 18,000 metric tonnes to 1,80,000 metric tonnes. This tenfold increase is part of the state's efforts to support farmers and ensure they receive fair prices for their produce.

Revised Procurement Plan

According to the revised plan, 1,30,000 metric tonnes of wheat will be procured through Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) and trade mandals, while the remaining 50,000 metric tonnes will be procured through the Food Corporation of India (FCI). The procurement process commenced on April 1 and will continue until June 15. The minimum support price (MSP) has been fixed at Rs 2,585 per quintal.

Objectives and Implementation

Officials have stated that the substantial increase in the procurement target is aimed at ensuring farmers receive fair prices for their produce while also boosting their income. The food and consumer protection department has revised district-wise procurement targets based on production estimates provided by the agriculture department. District officials have been directed to implement the revised targets on a priority basis and ensure smooth execution of procurement operations.
