The West Bengal government has announced that it will begin issuing forms for the Annapurna Yojana from May 27. This scheme aims to provide subsidized food grains to eligible beneficiaries across the state. The announcement was made by senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, who emphasized the importance of the scheme in ensuring food security for the underprivileged.
Details of the Scheme
The Annapurna Yojana is a central government initiative that provides 10 kilograms of free food grains per month to eligible households. In West Bengal, the state government will distribute the forms through local ration shops and designated distribution centers. Beneficiaries must submit their applications along with necessary documents such as Aadhaar cards and ration cards.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the scheme, applicants must be residents of West Bengal and belong to families identified as below the poverty line. Priority will be given to senior citizens, widows, and persons with disabilities. The state government has also set up a helpline number for any queries related to the scheme.
Implementation Timeline
The forms will be available from May 27 onwards, and the last date for submission is expected to be June 15. After verification, eligible beneficiaries will receive their food grain entitlements starting from July. The distribution will be done on a monthly basis through the public distribution system.
Political Reactions
Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, praised the move but also urged the state government to ensure transparency in the distribution process. He highlighted that the scheme could benefit millions of poor families in the state if implemented properly. The ruling Trinamool Congress party has not yet commented on the announcement.
The Annapurna Yojana was launched by the central government in 2021 as part of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana. It has been extended multiple times due to the ongoing economic challenges faced by the poor. The West Bengal government's decision to issue forms for the scheme is seen as a step towards addressing food insecurity in the state.
