Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu convened a crucial coordination meeting with power developers on Friday to assess the advancement of significant hydropower initiatives in Dibang Valley district. This strategic gathering aimed to ensure that these energy projects align with both regional development goals and national energy security objectives.
Review of Key Hydropower Projects
The meeting focused on several high-capacity hydropower projects currently in various stages of implementation and survey. The projects under discussion included the 3097 MW Etalin Hydroelectric Project (HEP) and the 680 MW Attunli HEP, both of which are actively under implementation. Additionally, the Emini 500 MW and Mihumdon 400 MW projects, which are currently in the survey phase, were also reviewed.
Focus on Timelines and Clearances
With a combined planned capacity of 5097 MW, the discussions during the meeting centered on critical aspects such as project timelines, necessary clearances, and regulatory approvals. Chief Minister Khandu emphasized the importance of adhering to schedules while ensuring that all environmental and social safeguards are properly addressed.
In a post on social media platform X, Khandu highlighted that the development of these projects must support local welfare, infrastructure growth, and contribute to India's energy security. He stressed that while pursuing energy generation goals, the well-being of local communities remains a paramount consideration.
Etalin HEP: India's Largest Hydropower Project
The 3097 MW Etalin Hydroelectric Project, slated to be India's largest hydropower initiative, received particular attention during the review. Located on the Dri river in Dibang Valley district, this transformative project is being developed by SJVN Ltd and is expected to commence operations soon.
Khandu described the Etalin HEP as a game-changing initiative that will accelerate infrastructure development in the region, generate substantial employment opportunities, boost local livelihoods, and significantly strengthen India's energy security framework. The project represents a major step toward harnessing Arunachal Pradesh's vast hydropower potential.
Site Visit and Detailed Briefing
Following the coordination meeting, Chief Minister Khandu, accompanied by legislators and government officials, visited the project site along the Roing-Anini highway. During this field inspection, the delegation received a comprehensive briefing from SJVN officials about the current status, technical specifications, and implementation challenges of the hydropower projects.
The site visit provided firsthand insights into the ground realities of project execution and allowed the CM to assess the progress being made on these critical energy infrastructure developments. This hands-on approach underscores the state government's commitment to ensuring timely and responsible implementation of these strategic projects.
