The Delhi government has unveiled an ambitious plan to establish 100 affordable food canteens across the national capital, with the launch scheduled for December 25th - the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Massive Expansion of Affordable Food Initiative
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta confirmed that the administration will roll out these budget-friendly canteens in multiple phases throughout the city. The initial phase will see 100 locations activated, with all sites already identified and prepared for operation.
According to the Chief Minister's announcement, selected organizations will be entrusted with managing these food centers. Each canteen will serve 500 meals during morning hours and another 500 in the evening, significantly expanding access to affordable nutrition for Delhi residents.
Comprehensive Food Quality and Safety Measures
The menu at these canteens will feature traditional Indian staples including dal, chawal, seasonal vegetables, and freshly prepared roti. To maintain consistent quality and safety standards, the government has implemented rigorous monitoring systems.
All food distribution will operate through a digital token system, completely eliminating manual coupons to prevent any potential irregularities. Every distribution center will be equipped with CCTV cameras enabling real-time monitoring through DUSIB's digital platform.
The kitchen facilities will feature modern appliances including LPG-based cooking systems, industrial RO water purification, and cold storage units. Food samples and raw materials will undergo regular testing by FSSAI and NABL-accredited laboratories to ensure nutritional quality and safety standards.
Fulfilling Election Commitment with Robust Framework
This initiative fulfills one of the key promises made by the BJP during the Delhi election campaign in February. The implementing agencies will be required to submit monthly compliance reports covering food distribution statistics, employee health certifications, fire safety clearances, and valid FSSAI licenses.
The government will provide subsidies to maintain the affordable Rs 5 price point while ensuring food quality remains high. An inter-departmental committee has already approved recommendations concerning site selection, menu planning, and distribution network logistics.
Chief Minister Gupta emphasized the philosophical foundation of the scheme, quoting Atal Bihari Vajpayee: "Poverty is not merely a lack of money, but a lack of opportunity." She added that this initiative aims to ensure that no resident of Delhi goes hungry while honoring the legacy of the former Prime Minister.
