Western Railway has put forward a significant safety enhancement plan. The railway zone aims to implement the indigenous KAVACH train collision avoidance system. This proposal covers the Udhna–Jalgaon section and its locomotive fleet.
Major Investment for Safety Upgrades
The total proposed investment stands at Rs 483.65 crore. This funding falls under Indian Railways' Umbrella Work Programme for 2024–25. The initiative focuses on boosting operational safety across critical routes.
Section-Specific Installation
Western Railway has allocated Rs 109.83 crore for the Udhna–Jalgaon section. This 307-kilometer corridor handles both passenger and freight trains. Installing KAVACH here will directly enhance safety for numerous daily operations.
Locomotive Fleet Modernization
An additional Rs 373.82 crore is proposed for locomotive upgrades. The plan involves modifying, upgrading, and programming 436 locomotives. These changes will ensure full compatibility with the KAVACH system across Western Railway's fleet.
National Safety Initiative
This project forms part of a larger national effort. The initiative is titled "Provision of KAVACH with communication backbone of Long-Term Evolution (LTE) on balance routes of Indian Railways (Umbrella Work 2024–25)". It received approval under the Works, Machinery & Rolling Stock Programme 2024–25.
The overall cost for this nationwide program is Rs 27,693 crore (PH-33). Western Railway's proposal represents a crucial component of this expansive safety drive. The implementation will mark a substantial step toward modernizing India's railway safety infrastructure.
